• 太子出遊到北門的時候，突然間對面來了一位威儀濟濟，道貌堂堂的沙門。悉達多王子一見，就對這位沙門合掌恭敬地請問：「你是什麼人呀？」沙門：「我是比丘。」王子又問：「比丘是做什麼的呢？」答：「比丘是出家修行求道的僧人。我們出家人，一心修道，可以解決自己和一切眾生的生老病死四種最大的痛苦。」王子聽後心想：我一向要解決一切眾生的生老病死的根本痛苦，他說得太好了。王子正想再進一步仔仔細細地向他求教，但是一剎那間，抬頭一看，這位沙門忽然不見了。王子大喜，他要解決人們的老病死苦，有了榜樣，太子非常高興地回宮去了。

於是得到了比丘啟發的悉達多放棄了王子的身分，成為一個苦行者，為致力要解決一 切眾生的生老病死的根本痛苦，踏上了流浪之旅。在流浪的旅途中他認識了許許多多的人和事。最後他在菩提樹下靜坐七七四十九天後終於開悟，免除了貪、嗔、癡三毒，成為了悟者(也就是佛陀)。
